The internet service provider for Aalto University Student Union (AYY) residents is about to change. We have heard that this change has raised concerns within the student community. In this article, Chair of the AYY Board Joona Lipponen responds to questions that concern our members.

Aalto University Student Union invites Aalto students to participate in an art contest seeking permanent artworks for a new student housing building on Otakaari 15, to be completed this summer. The contest’s inspiring themes include the Otaniemi campus, the Aalto University community, and its vibrant student life. Application period: 9 Feb–31 Mar 2026

The 15-year wait of the Otaniemi teekkari community was rewarded in early November, when the community ceremonially introduced the new polyteekkari flag at the 153rd Teekkari Tradition Ball. The previous flag that had united the teekkaris of Otaniemi was the flag of the Student Union of the Helsinki University of Technology, which served the community from 1909 to 2009 and was laid to its well-earned rest with the founding of the Aalto University Student Union. This is how the new flag came into being. 

The application round for the new student apartments that are being built in Otakaari 15 starts on 16 March. The property will have 153 modern apartments that have been designed to meet the needs of current students right at the heart of Aalto University’s campus.

The Aalto University Student Union (AYY) has sold the property it owned at Kirkonkyläntie 16. The real estate transaction was completed on December 19, 2025, and the buyer is HKA Kiinteistöt Oy.

Following a tender process, the internet connection provider for student union properties will change.

As part of the digitalization process in Finland, Aalto University is switching electronic degree certificates. AYY has been advocating against the digital certificate, aiming to ensure a physical token to graduates.

Aalto University Student Union has a wide range of volunteers working in sections, committees and other positions of trust. Volunteer recruitment is open annually from October to January. Volunteers appointed for 2026 will be announced on this page as the decisions are confirmed. Congratulations to new volunteers and thank you to all the applicants!

Aalto University Student Union’s new Representative Council has approved the members proposed by Former of the Board Joona Lipponen for the 2026 AYY Board. The Representative Council’s vice chairs were also appointed at the meeting.

Marcell Berta has been elected as a member of the Board of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) for 2026. SYL’s General Assembly held in Otaniemi, Espoo, on 14–15 November voted on the board members on Saturday evening.

Aalto University Student Union’s Representative Council appointed Joona Lipponen Former of the AYY Board and Henrik Starck Chair of the 2026 Representative Council.
