Developments in housing activities in 2023
AYY continuously develops its housing activities in order to respond to the needs of students as well as possible. At present, AYY’s targets for development include real estate services, consistency of reservations for common facilities and services, the selling of low demand housing, energy saving and making it easier to contact AYY.
Student housing must not be excluded from investment grants for special groups
Student housing construction and renovation are supported with investment grants for special groups provided by the Housing Fund of Finland. The proposal of the Ministry of Finance to exclude students from investment grants for special groups has been made on false grounds.
Tiina Pajukari and Ronja Mäkinen started as the new policy specialists
AYY has recruited two new policy specialists for the advocacy team: Tiina Pajukari and Ronja Mäkinen. Tiina Pajukari works as social policy and sustainable development specialist and Ronja Mäkinen as international affairs and equality specialist. Both policy specialists have a long history in the student movement.

Additions to AYY’s art collection - works on display at the Museum of Student Life
Seven works of art have been added to the art collection of Aalto University Student Union. The works of art are on display at AYY’s Museum of Student Life. The museum is open on Sundays from 2 pm to 4 pm.
Can I get more housing allowance if my rent is increased?
Due to increased costs, Aalto University Student Union has had to increase the rents. You can apply for more housing allowance from Kela if your housing costs increase.

Sauna available at Rantasauna from 16 Jan onwards
At the request of the Representative Council, the saunas at Rantasauna are available for booking from 16 Jan onwards. Due to increased costs, AYY has increased the rental rate of the saunas. You can cancel previously made reservations free of charge.
A-type student residence permit - could Finland do better?
Since April 2022, International students have been able to apply for a visa tied to the entire length of their studies. No more yearly juggling of finances and applications! AYY believes we need to achieve equality between different groups of students. Have we achieved that? In this blog, we discuss the new A-type student residence permit and the advocacy work that paved the way for it. We interviewed student union representatives from 2018-2022 and asked them the following questions. How did the new residence permit come to be? What does it look like now, and what still needs to be done? What might future international students think of it?

Parliamentary elections are approaching, are you ready? In April next year, we will vote on the future direction of students for the next four years. AYY is preventing the energy crisis - saunas closed for the winter season
Personal sauna reservations of Aalto University Student Union residents will be discontinued and saunas in rental facilities will be closed for energy saving reasons from 1 January to 31 March 2023. AYY also saves energy by lowering the temperature of staircases and storage spaces, for example.
