Young adults are the loneliest group in Finland – students launch Wappu fundraiser

Aalto University Student Union’s (AYY) Fuksi Committee and International Committee are raising funds ahead of Wappu to help reduce loneliness among young people. The funds raised will be directed to HelsinkiMissio’s work to combat loneliness among young people.

Wappu in Otaniemi has started. Students are tackling loneliness among young people by launching a May Day charity fundraiser. In Finland, loneliness affects young adults the most.

According to recent research (SPR 2026), young adults aged 16–24 and 25–34 experience loneliness more than any other group. In addition, one-third of higher education students experience harmful loneliness at their educational institution (HelsinkiMissio 2025).

‘These statistics are concerning. This Wappu, we want to join forces and direct the funds raised to young people experiencing loneliness. It is important that young people find support and are not left to cope with loneliness alone. We students know that there is strength in community, especially in difficult times’, says Fuksi Major Sara Blomqvist

With the funds raised, HelsinkiMissio will provide free discussion support for young people, peer support groups, and companionship activities. You can also get involved in the activities as a volunteer.

‘HelsinkiMissio’s counselling services offer support for relationship issues, challenging life situations, and loneliness, either in person in Helsinki or remotely, including for students on international exchange. You should seek help in time, as prolonged loneliness can affect your health and make coping with studies more difficult’, says counselling professional and group leader Taina Salovuori from HelsinkiMissio.

Fuksi Committee’s and International Committee’s Wappu Together fundraiser is open until 2 May 2026 at bit.ly/wappuyhdessä
