Apply for AYY’s SYL General Assembly Delegation or run for the SYL Board!

The National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) represents university students in national decision-making. The action plan and policy paper guiding SYL's advocacy work are approved at the General Assembly, where the SYL Board will also be elected. The 2026 General Assembly will take place on 13–14 November 2026. In this news item, you will find instructions on how to register for AYY's SYL General Assembly Delegation and how to run as AYY's candidate for the SYL Board.

Registration for the SYL General Assembly Delegation 

In accordance with the SYL regulations approved at the Representative Council meeting, the Representative Council groups nominate their own representatives to AYY's SYL General Assembly delegation, or alternatively, relinquish their seats in the delegation. The Representative Council groups must register their representatives or relinquish their seats by 23.59 pm on 7 September 2026 using this form. Every member of AYY has the right to apply for the SYL General Assembly delegation. If you are not nominated as a general assembly delegate through a Representative Council group, you may apply for the delegation through the seats that have been relinquished. Delegates must commit to attending the entire general assembly. Please note that the meeting may run late on Saturday. 

Please note that anyone wishing to become a delegate must register for the delegationvia this form. The last day to register for the SYL General Assembly Delegation is 7 September 2026 at 23.59 pm. Open event on the SYL's general assembly materials will be held on 14th of September from 16.00 to 18.00. 

Each Representative Council group has a number of seats in the AYY delegation, distributed according to the balance of power within the Representative Council. AYY has a total of 19 ordinary delegates. 

The distribution of seats in the delegation is as follows: 

  • Board's quota: 5 ordinary delegates 

  • Kylterirengas: 3 ordinary delegates 

  • Jämerä Ratas: 6 ordinary delegates 

  • Aallon Kokoomus: 1 ordinary delegate 

  • Greener Aalto: 1 ordinary delegate 

  • Pro Progress: 2 ordinary delegates 

  • Våga: 1 ordinary delegate 

A substitute delegate may be appointed for each ordinary delegate. A substitute delegate may also act as a substitute for more than one delegate. In addition, an ordinary delegate may act as a substitute for another delegate. 

Guidelines for running as a candidate for the 2027 SYL Board 

Being a member of the SYL Board is a full-time position of trust for which remuneration is paid. As a member of the board, you have the opportunity to advocate for a better tomorrow for every university student. AYY candidates for a member or chair position on the SYL Board are required to commit for the entire year, have an understanding of student advocacy and strong motivation for the position. AYY's candidates for the SYL Board are interviewed by the Advocacy Committee, which proposes the SYL Board candidate(s) to the AYY Board. The AYY Board approves the proposal made by the Advocacy Committee. Interviews will take place in the morning 9 September 2026 at AYY’s office at Otakaari 25, Espoo. Candidates will be personally informed of the exact time of their interview. The selection process will take place in week 37, and all candidates will be informed.

AYY’s new student housing building completed in Otaniemi – 153 new student apartments

Aalto University Student Union’s (AYY) new student building in Otaniemi was completed on 31 July 2026. Otakaari 15 brings 153 new student apartments to the metropolitan area, providing homes for approximately 200 Aalto University students. All apartments have been rented.

The new Design Notebook has been published

The brand-new Design Notebook is now available and can be collected from AYY service office or Kipsari student restaurant free of charge. The notebook was designed by Wenjia Tang, a master’s student in Visual Communication Design, who won the design competition earlier this year.

The proposal for an overall reform of student financial aid is disappointing
