Marcell Berta elected to the Board of the National Union of University Students in Finland for 2026
Marcell Berta, a member of the Aalto University Student Union (AYY) Board, was elected today, 15 November, to the 2026 Board of the National Union of University Students in Finland. Berta was AYY’s official candidate for the SYL Board.
Berta, 24, is a master's student in mathematics at Aalto University's School of Science. This year, he has served as a member of the AYY Board with responsibility for education policy. Berta has extensive experience in various positions of trust. He currently serves as a student representative in university administration and as a deputy member of the Espoo City Technical Services Committee. In addition, he has served as chair of the Greener Aalto representative group and the Community Committee, among other positions.
Berta is an experienced student advocate who is particularly passionate about education policy, accessibility and inclusivity issues. He wants to develop the activities of the National Union of University Students in Finland to make it more approachable and accessible to students.
‘I'm extremely grateful for the trust of the SYL General Assembly for electing me. Next year it’s time to prepare for the parliamentary elections, and I’m looking forward to being a strong advocate to make our education system more accessible, appreciated, and well-funded’, says the newly elected Berta.
The General Assembly elects the SYL Board and decides on the union’s activities for 2026. The National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) represents approximately 150,000 university students in Finland. SYL is a student advocacy, service, and civic organisation that influences education policy, social policy, and international affairs.

The proposal for an overall reform of student financial aid is disappointing
