AYY is preventing the energy crisis - saunas closed for the winter season
AYY decided to discontinue residents’ personal sauna reservations for the coldest months from 1 January to 31 March 2023. In addition, AYY decided to close saunas in rental facilities from 1 Jan to 31 Mar 2023.
AYY must restrict the residents’ sauna reservations due to the impending energy crisis. AYY wants to contribute to saving energy in the coldest months in order to ensure that there is enough electricity for everyone and to avoid rotating power outages. However, residents can go to the sauna during public sauna shifts. Residents' wishes for the timing of public sauna shifts have been heard at the residents’ meetings.
In addition to energy saving reasons, saunas in rental facilities are closed due to economic reasons, such as the high price of electricity and hot water. However, the facilities are available without saunas and there will be no change in the rental prices of the facilities. At the request of the Representative Council, AYY will investigate the possibility of keeping one sauna facility in use during the winter. More information about this opportunity will be available at the beginning of 2023 at the latest.
AYY also saves energy by monitoring the energy and water consumption of its residential properties, which helps us to detect leaking plumbing fixtures quickly, for example. In addition, building automation controls are optimized to reduce overheating and energy loss. There will be no change in the temperature of the apartments, which will remain at 21-22 degrees. The temperature of stairways and storage spaces is lowered to 18 degrees.

A promise of free education is not enough
The Ministry of Education and Culture has published a vision for higher education and research for 2040, which is intended to guide the direction of Finland's higher education policy. Increasing the number of university graduates in the young age group to 60 per cent, as proposed by the vision, requires investments and ambition from decision-makers. In this blog, Totti Korpua, AYY’s Advocacy Specialist, discusses the significance of the vision for students.
