HSL’s decision to increase fares is a disappointment
The HSL Executive Board has decided to increase fares by 3.1 per cent for the coming year. Although this increase is smaller than the previously planned 6.4 per cent, it still puts a strain on students’ already tight finances. AYY has advocated against raising ticket prices and has instead called for a reduction in student fares.
If the fare increase is annual, the price of a 30-day student ticket for the AB zone will rise by up to 5.6 per cent by 2028. In that case, student ticket prices would increase by more than 97 per cent compared with the 2015 level.
‘This decision is deeply disappointing, as one of the options was not to raise fares at all. The increase in student ticket prices is downright outrageous, given that students’ livelihoods are already under strain’, AYY Board Member Katariina Kokkonen comments with frustration.
AYY has demanded that the HSL’s increased costs be covered by municipalities, not by passengers.

The proposal for an overall reform of student financial aid is disappointing
Aalto University Student Union (AYY) made a statement on the legislative proposal of the Ministry of Education and Culture concerning the comprehensive reform of student financial aid. The proposal is disappointing because it does not solve the core problems of student financial aid or improve the livelihoods of students.
A promise of free education is not enough
The Ministry of Education and Culture has published a vision for higher education and research for 2040, which is intended to guide the direction of Finland's higher education policy. Increasing the number of university graduates in the young age group to 60 per cent, as proposed by the vision, requires investments and ambition from decision-makers. In this blog, Totti Korpua, AYY’s Advocacy Specialist, discusses the significance of the vision for students.
