Due to the new policy, deposits will no longer be collected from everyone as previously. Instead, deposits will be collected from the following client groups:

Deposits will be collected from the following tenants:

  • Individuals with poor credit records
  • Individuals whose credit rating cannot be verified, such as new international students without a Finnish social security number
  • All tenants moving into friends’ apartments, regardless of nationality or credit rating
  • All exchange students

The deposit must be paid upon accepting the housing offer.

Please note! International students, in particular, are advised to update their Finnish social security number in Domo to allow for a credit record check and to avoid paying the deposit.

The reform will apply to new housing offers from 6 November, and previously paid deposits will remain unchanged until the end of the tenancy.

Deposit amount

  • The deposit is primarily equivalent to one month’s rent.
  • In the case of a poor credit record, the deposit may be the equivalent to 2–3 months’ rent.

Practical implementation
Credit records are checked when accepting the housing offer, and the deposit must be paid upon accepting the offer. The rental agreement enters into force only after the deposit has been paid. If the deposit is not paid within the specified time frame, the housing offer will expire.

Background to the change
The AYY Board made a decision in principle to waive the general deposit policy already in 2022.

The new polyteekkari flag finally raised in Otaniemi

The 15-year wait of the Otaniemi teekkari community was rewarded in early November, when the community ceremonially introduced the new polyteekkari flag at the 153rd Teekkari Tradition Ball. The previous flag that had united the teekkaris of Otaniemi was the flag of the Student Union of the Helsinki University of Technology, which served the community from 1909 to 2009 and was laid to its well-earned rest with the founding of the Aalto University Student Union. This is how the new flag came into being.
