AYY’s Representative Council election results are clear – turnout 27.87 %
In the election, AYY’s highest decision-making body, a 45-member Representative Council, was elected for a two-year term. 326 candidates stood for election, which is the highest number since 2011 and the third highest in AYY’s history. 14 electoral alliances competed for the Representative Council seats.
Turnout was 27.87 percent, which is 4.08 percentage points lower than in AYY’s previous Representative Council election in 2023. A total of 5097 students exercised their right to vote.
‘It is worrying that only just over a quarter of the members chose to use their vote in the most important elections of our community. The incoming Representative Council and Board should begin to consider increasing the resources allocated to the Council and its elections’, laments Central Election Committee Chair Sampo Sainio.
The top vote-getter in this election was Pro Arte candidate Oliver Bäcksbacka, who received 68 votes. The next highest vote-getters were Filip Eller from LUOVA with 62 votes, Vilppu Viinikainen from SCIsma with 61 votes, Lucas Jordi Lassenius from Pro Arte with 60 votes and Aune Hyvönen from Greener Aalto with 58 votes.
As a result of the election, the Representative Council’s largest electoral alliance with ten seats is now Kylterirengas, whose number of seats increased by four. Yhden Tähden Liike entered the Representative Council for the first time, gaining four seats. Greener Aalto maintained its position among the largest electoral alliances, however, with its number of seats falling from seven to five. The result for electoral alliances viinam_juonti,,,puolue (jänpti), Järkevä Aalto and Otahullut was not enough to win seats on the Representative Council.
‘I am particularly pleased about the new groups that gained seats in the Representative Council, as this indicates the Council’s ability to renew itself’, comments Central Election Committee Chair Sainio.
Seats in the RepCo were distributed to the electoral alliances as follows:
Kylterirengas 10 (+4)
Vihreämpi Aalto - Greener Aalto - Grönare Aalto 5 (-2)
Yhden Tähden Liike 4 (+4)
Aallon Kokoomus 4 (-3)
LUOVA 4 (+-0)
CHEM 4 (+1)
Pro Arte 3 (-2)
Konergia 3 (+1)
Vapaasti vasemmalla – Lenient Left 3 (+-0)
SCIsma 3 (-2)
Våga 2 (-1)
viinam_juonti,,,puolue (jänpti) 0 (+-0)
Järkevä Aalto 0 (+-0)
Otahullut 0 (+-0)

A promise of free education is not enough
The Ministry of Education and Culture has published a vision for higher education and research for 2040, which is intended to guide the direction of Finland's higher education policy. Increasing the number of university graduates in the young age group to 60 per cent, as proposed by the vision, requires investments and ambition from decision-makers. In this blog, Totti Korpua, AYY’s Advocacy Specialist, discusses the significance of the vision for students.
