The contract for the Otakaari 15 student housing project has been signed
"This is some of the best news of the year for the student union! Student activities typically proceed at a high tempo, but properties are long-term projects, and we have been working on this one for several years. It’s exciting to see the project progress from planning to the construction phase, with the physical building of the property set to start in Otaniemi.
Over the past six years that I have spent here, Otaniemi has developed significantly as a campus area, with new student housing playing a major role in this development. It’s great to have Varte join the project. We have a clear mission and goal to complete the project efficiently and provide more student housing on the campus", rejoices Chair of the AYY Board
Fanni Mattsson.
Varte Oy, the contractor chosen for the Otakaari 15 project, is also looking forward to the project's progress.
"Collaboration with AYY has started off successfully. The customer has a solid understanding of the property, which is reflected in the excellent planning solutions. We are excited to construct a high-quality, functional property for AYY. Once completed, the property will be a timeless housing development, built with high-quality standards. Collaboration with AYY has been open and straightforward from the start, and this will be maintained throughout the construction cooperation", comments Varte’s Housing Construction Director Tuomas Parvila.
Construction work will begin at Otakaari in February 2025, and the property will be completed in August 2026.

Aalto University Student Union (AYY) made a statement on the legislative proposal of the Ministry of Education and Culture concerning the comprehensive reform of student financial aid. The proposal is disappointing because it does not solve the core problems of student financial aid or improve the livelihoods of students.
A promise of free education is not enough
The Ministry of Education and Culture has published a vision for higher education and research for 2040, which is intended to guide the direction of Finland's higher education policy. Increasing the number of university graduates in the young age group to 60 per cent, as proposed by the vision, requires investments and ambition from decision-makers. In this blog, Totti Korpua, AYY’s Advocacy Specialist, discusses the significance of the vision for students.
