An electronic certificate is coming, what does it mean for students?

As part of the digitalization process in Finland, Aalto University is switching electronic degree certificates. AYY has been advocating against the digital certificate, aiming to ensure a physical token to graduates.

As part of the digitalization process in Finland, Aalto University is switching electronic degree certificates. Many other Higher Education institutions in Finland have either already made the change or they are planning to change soon. AYY has been advocating against the digital certificate, aiming to ensure a physical token to graduates. Here are answers to some questions you might have about the change:

Why is Aalto University changing?

E-certificates are more secure, easier to use, and also lower paper consumption.

What does AYY think about the change? Have students been involved in the process?

AYY recognizes the benefits of the e-certificate. However, we also see the value and importance of a physical degree certificate. We released a statement in 2025 Spring jointly with our subject associations as part of our advocacy efforts to ensure we receive a physical token like the earlier certificates. As a result of this advocacy work we will be receiving a graduation folder. The design of which received mixed feelings within AYY, and we look to improve it during the Spring.

Will I receive anything at the graduation ceremony?

YES! While certificates will no longer be given out, you will receive a graduation folder. Inside this brand-new folder, you will find a letter from your Dean and the President of Aalto university, congratulating you on your accomplishment and informing you on what awaits you as an Aalto alum.

I don’t like the graduation folder. Can’t we have the old design?

The new folder design is not set-in-stone, and we at AYY are looking forward to advocating for improving it in the future. If you have comments or feedback about the design, don’t hesitate to contact our education policy sector. We will be collecting feedback in a formal manner following the graduation ceremonies to make sure that our community’s voices are heard.

What if I need a physical certificate for my career or other pressing reason?

It is possible to request a physical copy of the certificate upon request.

I lost the PDF or failed to download it earlier, what do I do?

Yes, you can get the digital one again, just contact Aalto’s student services.

Where can I find further information on practicalities?

You can visit Aalto’s website for further information: The electronic degree certificate and FAQ | Aalto University

The new polyteekkari flag finally raised in Otaniemi

The 15-year wait of the Otaniemi teekkari community was rewarded in early November, when the community ceremonially introduced the new polyteekkari flag at the 153rd Teekkari Tradition Ball. The previous flag that had united the teekkaris of Otaniemi was the flag of the Student Union of the Helsinki University of Technology, which served the community from 1909 to 2009 and was laid to its well-earned rest with the founding of the Aalto University Student Union. This is how the new flag came into being.
