The member vote opens – share your opinion on the internet connection speed and the importance of Trinet

AYY has received a request for a member vote and has decided to open the first member vote in the student union’s history. Through this vote, we will gather members’ views on the internet connection speed and the importance of Trinet as a service provider. The electronic vote will be open from 12 noon on 27 Apr until 18.00 on 30 Apr and all AYY members can vote.

Aalto University Student Union (AYY) has recently conducted a tender for the residents’ internet service provider. As a result, the service provider will change, and the in-house Trinet service will be discontinued. The reasons for this include the high costs of Trinet and the need to reduce pressure for rent increases. As a housing provider, it is important for AYY to aim to curb increases in students’ housing costs. Over the past several years, the Representative Council and the housing cooperative (ASY) have sought to limit rent increases. You can read more in our previous release.

On 26 Feb, AYY received a request for a member vote regarding Trinet and the internet connection speed in AYY’s housing and facilities. The member vote is a way for student union members to express their views on an individual issue. In accordance with section 8 of the student union bylaws, a consultative member vote must be held when at least 500 members request it from the Board, or when more than half of the Representative Council members request a vote at a meeting. In this first member vote in AYY’s history, we will gather members’ views on the internet connection speed and the importance of Trinet service for members.

The member vote will open on 27 Apr at 12 noon and close on 30 Apr at 18.00. During the same period, AYY’s member survey will also be open, where you can share your views and wishes regarding AYY’s broader operations.

A promise of free education is not enough

The Ministry of Education and Culture has published a vision for higher education and research for 2040, which is intended to guide the direction of Finland's higher education policy. Increasing the number of university graduates in the young age group to 60 per cent, as proposed by the vision, requires investments and ambition from decision-makers. In this blog, Totti Korpua, AYY’s Advocacy Specialist, discusses the significance of the vision for students.
