Can I receive student financial aid in the summer?

Yes! You can receive a study grant, a housing supplement, and a student loan if you are pursuing degree-related studies during the summer.

There is still time to register for many summer courses. You can explore the university’s offering for summer on Aalto website.

How to apply for financial aid for the summer?

You can apply by submitting a notification of changes in the OmaKela e-service. We recommend applying as early as possible, as student financial aid can be paid from the beginning of the month in which Kela receives your application at the earliest. You do not have to state what studies you intend to complete.

What if the financial aid is not sufficient?

If needed, you can also apply for social assistance for the summer months. You do not have to discontinue your studies or register with the employment services, but you may be required to apply for a student loan.

For matters related to student financial aid, please contact Kela or read more at kela.fi/students.

The proposal for an overall reform of student financial aid is disappointing

Aalto University Student Union (AYY) made a statement on the legislative proposal of the Ministry of Education and Culture concerning the comprehensive reform of student financial aid. The proposal is disappointing because it does not solve the core problems of student financial aid or improve the livelihoods of students.

A promise of free education is not enough

The Ministry of Education and Culture has published a vision for higher education and research for 2040, which is intended to guide the direction of Finland's higher education policy. Increasing the number of university graduates in the young age group to 60 per cent, as proposed by the vision, requires investments and ambition from decision-makers. In this blog, Totti Korpua, AYY’s Advocacy Specialist, discusses the significance of the vision for students.
