AYY nominates Mantė Žygelytė as a candidate for the SYL Board 2025
Aalto University Student Union nominates Mantė Žygelytė as a candidate for the Board of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL). Mantė Žygelytė, 26, is a Lithuanian master’s student at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture at Aalto University. This year, she has served as Vice Chair of the Aalto University Student Union Board, responsible for equity and advocacy. Žygelytė has extensive experience in various positions of trust within the Aalto community. In her leisure time, Žygelytė likes to play sudoku, do outdoors sketching and attend dancing classes.
‘I am honoured and grateful to have my student union's trust in running for the SYL Board 2025. Being the first international nominee from AYY means that I am entrusted to bring perspectives and expertise that, unfortunately, are often not heard in decision-making circles at the national level. I am excited and eager to dive into this new chapter!’, Žygelytė comments on her nomination.
Žygelytė reflects on the key goals of the student movement for the upcoming year: ‘The year 2025 will be crucial for bringing a strong voice of students through solution-oriented advocacy work. Student livelihoods, housing, and access to worry-free education will be important topics to advocate for. The international student community will require even more attention and care, especially, in regard to rising tuition fees, financial instabilities, and being welcomed and included both in the student communities and in Finland, as a country. SYL has a significant role to play in all of this!’
SYL will elect the Board for 2025 at its general assembly in Espoo on 15–16 of November 2024. SYL represents university students in Finland at the national level and takes a stand on educational, social, and international issues.

A promise of free education is not enough
The Ministry of Education and Culture has published a vision for higher education and research for 2040, which is intended to guide the direction of Finland's higher education policy.
