Aalto University Student Union Board appointed for 2025
At its previous meeting on 29 October, the Representative Council appointed its current Chair, Sakari Ropponen, as the former of the AYY Board. Ropponen made a proposal regarding the board members for 2025. At meeting 10/2024 today, on 21 Nov, the Representative Council approved Ropponen’s proposal and appointed the Student Union Board for the next year.

The Board, appointed for each calendar year, exercises the administrative and executive powers of the Student Union. The Board is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Student Union and the implementation of the plan of action. The responsibilities of the board members will be formally determined at the first board meeting in early 2025.

At its meeting, the Representative Council also elected vice chairs for the Representative Council for 2025. Daniel Schiechl was appointed as the first vice chair and Juho Tiihonen as the second vice chair. At the previous meeting, KY’s current chair Tilda Leikola was appointed as the Chair of the Representative Council.

The proposal for an overall reform of student financial aid is disappointing
Aalto University Student Union (AYY) made a statement on the legislative proposal of the Ministry of Education and Culture concerning the comprehensive reform of student financial aid. The proposal is disappointing because it does not solve the core problems of student financial aid or improve the livelihoods of students.
A promise of free education is not enough
The Ministry of Education and Culture has published a vision for higher education and research for 2040, which is intended to guide the direction of Finland's higher education policy. Increasing the number of university graduates in the young age group to 60 per cent, as proposed by the vision, requires investments and ambition from decision-makers.
